The Michigan Animal Adoption Network / Animal Care Network Receives $10,000 Grant from PetSmart Charities to Spay/Neuter Pets

Pontiac, Michigan – February 3, 2010 – The Michigan Animal Adoption Network / Animal Care Network (MAAN/ACN) received a grant from PetSmart Charities that will help control the pet overpopulation epidemic currently plaguing Michigan. The $10,000 grant will increase Animal Care Network number of spay/neuter operations by 65 percent.

This program offers spay/neuter services for low-income dog owners residing in Pontiac for just a $10 co-pay. This is a remarkable savings from the average cost of a spay/neuter procedure, which varies from $200 to $300.

In the last four months, 102 dogs (64 female and 38 male) from Pontiac have been spayed/neutered thanks to this grant. The majority are pit bulls and pit bull mixes. This grant program has prevented literally thousands of unwanted and homeless puppies from being born.

Animal Care Network Manager Pam Porteous said, “During these tough times in Michigan, not only is spay/neuter the responsible thing to do, it is the economic thing to do. When people lose their homes, so do the pets.”
