Animal Care Network Rescue Stories

Wiggles's Rescue: A Success Story

Wiggles was left in the garage with the garbage when owners moved out. He weighed only 6 pounds, covered in feces and extremely dehydrated. He would have died in a few more days.

A Rescue for Rosie

"Just skin and its skeleton" - animal network volunteer had never seen a dog so severely emaciated

Animal Care Network staff members Carmel Herpel (left) and Amanda Mabry take care of Rosie, a wheaten terrier mix rescued from a home on the north side of Pontiac.

PONTIAC - Animal rescue workers say it was among the worst cases of neglect they had ever seen. Thin skin clinging to her bones, the skinny wheaten terrier mix was too weak to lift her head or stand. Her gums were white from dehydration.

Volunteers with the Animal Care Network took the dog from a Pontiac home and brought her to the Animal Care Network, where hopeful staff members are trying to nurse her back to health.

"I've never seen a dog as severely emaciated as this dog was," said care network volunteer Kathryn Tucker. "There was absolutely no tissue on this animal, just skin and its skeleton."

Max's Rescue: A Success Story

Meet Max. He was in serious distress when the Animal Care Network (ACN), was contacted. An ACN team led by Marie Skladd responded to the report and found Max and two young puppies in a backyard.

Max’s collar was too tight and embedded in his flesh. It was difficult to gain access to the dogs. The next day another ACN team tried again.

Working with the owners, volunteers Kathryn and Dave removed the chain from Max’s neck and treated it for infection. The ACN provided Max with a new nylon collar and a new leash on life. The Animal Care Network Team will continue to monitor the situation.

Rooftop Kittens

Animal Care Network was able to rescue these two kittens that had been on this roof for days without food and water.

Pitbull

Animal Care Network volunteers rescued this emaciated pitbull from a backyard. The owner of the dog was put in prison and the other 10 people that were living in the household couldn't manage to call about the dog, nor feed or water her for weeks. This is one of the reasons the ACN runs are so important. If we had not been making our rounds that weekend we never would have known about this dog.

Bella's Rescue: A Success Story

Bella was in terrible shape when she was rescued on a ACN run. She had a severe skin infection and was extremely malnourished. As you can see, she was rehabilitated and adopted into a loving home with a family that loves her very much!

Bruno

Animal Care Network volunteers discovered Bruno in a backyard on a routine ACN run. He was emaciated, dehydrated and had no shelter. Bruno was nursed back to health and has been adopted.

Gracie

In the middle of winter on a routine Animal Care Network run, volunteers noticed a small grey object in the middle of a main road. They quickly turned around and stopped traffic. What they found was a 6 week old grey kitten that was suffering from hypothermia. Gracie was one lucky kitten, she only avoided being run over because she laid in the middle of a lane. We have no idea how long she was there. Gracie was nursed back to health and has been adopted.

Community Grooming

The Animal Care Network prides itself on helping people in the community with their pets. Thanks to PETCO in Bloomfield Hills, we were able to have several matted dogs groomed at no charge.

Hootch

Hooch was left in a backyard when his owner died. A neighbor alerted the Animal Care Network about the situation and Hooch was rescued!

Nicholas
Nicholas was rescued from the streets.  He had been attacked by three dogs and suffered some severe injuries.  Animal Care Network volunteers took him to the vet where he received over 50 stitches and had to have two drains put in his neck.  Nicholas made a full recovery and has been adopted

Chi Chi

This female chihuahua was rescued by Animal Care Network volunteers. She was found in a snow bank suffering from hypothermia (freezing). Chi Chi was nursed back to health and was adopted. If the team hadn't have spotted her she would have froze to death.

Tootsie

Tootsie a 12-year old Dachshund was put in a dark garage when her elderly owner died. Animal Care Network team responded to a complaint call and were able to rescue "Tootsie". She had a medical condition which required daily medication which she had not received in weeks. ACN was able to get her back on her medication and found Tootsie a new home where she can live out her life.

Pitbull with Weight

This pitbull was rescued from a backyard on a Animal Care Network run. The owner had attached a 20 pound weight to his collar obviously to make him a fighting dog.

Villa and Her Kittens

Animal Care Network volunteers responded to a call about a mom and kittens left abandoned at an apartment complex. We were able to rescue one mom with four 3-week old kittens; and then found two 1-week old kittens that had been abandoned by a different mother cat. Fortunately the mom with the 3-week old kittens also accepted the 1-week old kittens! Villa is being a great mom to both sets of kittens!!!

Abandoned

The Animal Care Network received a call about 15-20 dogs and puppies that were living in an abandoned lumber and boat yard. ACN sent teams down there with equipment, traps, etc to try to rescue some of these animals. The teams was able to rescue 15 dogs and puppies from this situation.
